I selected the word success as a point of interest because we want success for all students. In order for all students to be successful, we must include accommodations for a diverse group of students in the planning stage of a lesson. Remember that exceptionalities have an extensive range and can include:
● Learning disabilities
● Behavioral and/or emotional disorders
● Visual and/or hearing impairment
● Giftedness and creativity
When we plan lessons for exceptional learners we are allowing for the greatest amount of success for our projected lesson. Here are a few notes to keep in mind when creating your lessons with the exceptional student in mind.
The purpose of accommodations/modifications is to decrease or eliminate the interference from a known disability. These accommodations would be tied to a specific way to allow the most participation from an exceptional student. Accommodations are already part of the student’s ongoing instructional program so use that information as a starting point.
Our first key word is modify , remember to change anything that will prevent a student from being successful with a given task and allow the student with a disability to have an equal opportunity to participate . This will allow the student to be successful. Our second key word is question. Question what things can be changed, remember to pull the verbs for a starting point. Our third and final keyword is listen. Listen to what the students are saying or not saying by their actions. If we connect all of the missing pieces for exceptional students these lessons will have a profound impact in any classroom that recreates one of these thoughtfully created lessons.

Final thoughts: include technology, maximize learning for all students by using collaboration and use resources available for suggested supports for exceptional students link
